Identity Theft and Children
Normally, when I think of identity theft I think of someone looking over my shoulder, going through the trash, or using some high tech means of stealing a credit card number. I don’t normally think of young children who have never made a purchase and don’t even have a credit card. However, this population is very much at risk.
If someone has the SSN of a child that SSN can be used to establish credit and give the child bad credit before they even enter school. The News and Observer ran a great story on this problem. Sometimes the bad guys are strangers, but just as often, they are the parents of the child.
What you can do to minimize the risks of having your child’s identity stolen? The Identity Theft Resource Center has some great tips.
